News from City Hall yesterday: District 2 Councilwoman Sylvia Campos announced she will not seek a third term, citing health concerns.
Sylvia has been a tireless advocate for Corpus Christi — for the bay, for the inner harbor, for District 2 residents who haven’t always had the loudest voice in the room. She helped plant 12,000 trees in 2012. She registered thousands of voters through the League of Women Voters. She stood up to powerful special interests when it would have been easier not to. She showed up. Every time. For everyone.
She is also one of Conor Rice’s endorsers and a longtime friend of the Coastal Bend Democratic community.
Her own words from her announcement: “With health issues arising, it’s essential for me to prioritize my well-being.” That is exactly right. Health comes first. Always.
We send Sylvia our love, our gratitude, and our positivity for healing and rest. The District 2 seat is now open for the next election cycle, and the community she has built will continue the work she started. That’s what good leadership leaves behind — not a vacuum, but a community that knows how to keep going.
Thank you, Sylvia. For everything.
