About Island Democrats

Sure, Island Democrats might be based out here where the salt meets the sand, but don’t let the flip-flops fool you—the Island Dems are a powerhouse for the whole Coastal Bend.

We don’t just stick to the Island; we’re out here catching the wave for elections, campaigns, and voter registration all across Nueces County and deep into South Texas. We’re a rock-solid grassroots crew dedicated to shifting the tide, and honestly? We have the most fun doing it. Our meetings are legendary—come for the mission, stay for the vibes!

What We Do

Island Democrats — the heartbeat of the Blue Wave on North Padre Island.

Island Democrats is the grassroots Democratic precinct organization serving Precincts 40 and 81 on North Padre Island, with friends and neighbors throughout Port Aransas, Flour Bluff, and the broader Coastal Bend. We hit the sand in 2016 — when Precinct Chair Craig Rogers and his wife Victoria decided to stop whispering and start making waves — and we have been showing up ever since. Here is what showing up actually looks like.

Monday Covfefe at Island Starbucks

Every Monday morning at 10 AM, we gather at Island Starbucks for Monday Covfefe — our weekly civic coffee. It is informal, welcoming, and the best place to learn what is happening in Coastal Bend politics from people doing the work. Past guests have included Congressman Vicente Gonzalez and other elected officials from across Texas. New neighbors are always welcome. Just walk in. You will know us by the laughter.

Voter Registration and Civic Education

Several of our members are certified Volunteer Deputy Registrars in Nueces County, which means we can register voters anywhere — at events, at HEB, at the senior center, at your front door. We help newly eligible voters complete their registration, help voters with felony convictions understand their restored voting rights, and answer the questions people are often too nervous to ask. The work is patient, one-on-one, and never partisan at the registration table.

Local Writing and Civic Journalism

We publish original local writing at islanddemocrats.com covering the Corpus Christi water crisis, hurricane preparedness, voting rights, redistricting, and the issues that actually shape life on the Coastal Bend. We dig into the policy. We name the trade-offs. We write in a voice that respects readers across the political spectrum. The goal is not to score points. It is to inform our neighbors so they can make their own decisions.

Candidate Engagement and Election Support

Island Democrats host candidates, share their materials with our community, and help our members navigate the ballot every election. From local commissioner runoffs to congressional races, we provide the information our neighbors need: who is running, what they stand for, where to vote, when to vote, and how to make sure your vote counts. We also work alongside the Nueces County Democratic Party and statewide organizing efforts to expand Democratic participation across South Texas.

Community Presence and Mutual Aid

Hurricane preparedness drives. Beach socials. Yard sign distribution. Postcard parties. Checking on neighbors during storms. Sharing information when the water crisis worsens. The Island is a small community, and small communities take care of each other. Politics is the structure. Neighbors are the heart.

Join Island Democrats

There is no membership form and no dues. If you live on the Island, in Flour Bluff, in Port Aransas, or anywhere in the Coastal Bend and you want to be part of the work, you already qualify. Call us at 361-548-6804, email registerbluevoters@gmail.com, or just show up at Monday Covfefe. The next Monday is the right Monday to start.

Precinct by precinct. Door by door. Election by election. That is how a Blue Wave is built.

To compliment our efforts, we are working on a new website www.nuecescountydemocrats.com
