Corpus Christi Water Resources — Expanded Info
Here’s the good news: Corpus Christi is currently under Stage 3 Drought Restrictions, which means the city is actively offering several programs to help residents conserve water and manage costs. A lot of these are completely free and specifically helpful for folks on tight budgets. Be aware, the city may be moving to Level 1 restrictions. Pay attention to your news sources or the city website for changes in restriction levels.
Free Reclaimed Water for Yards & Plants
This is one of the best-kept secrets in town. The city offers Type 1 reclaimed water at no cost for landscape irrigation. You can pick it up in bulk at the Oso Water Reclamation Plant. Since we’re in Stage 3 restrictions, this is a legal way to keep your yard, garden, or fruit trees alive without racking up a water bill or getting fined.
How to get it:
- Apply for a free permit through the city’s wastewater website
- Approval usually takes 24–48 hours
- You’ll need a clean, leak-proof container with a water-tight lid, labeled “reclaimed water”
- Pick up at the Oso Wastewater Treatment Plant
This program has already given out over a million gallons to residents — it’s popular, it works, and it saves drinking water for what it’s actually needed for. Here is the link to info and permit paperwork needed to use. For additional questions, please contact 3-1-1.
Help With Your Water Bill — Project One Water
If you’re behind on your water bill or worried you might fall behind, the city partners with local nonprofit Mission 911 to help qualifying residents catch up. This is specifically designed for folks going through financial hardship.
How to apply:
- Call Mission 911 directly at (361) 882-0911
- You’ll need to be a current City of Corpus Christi utility customer
- They’ll ask for income verification and a copy of your utility bill
- Mission 911 can also connect families to food, housing, and job assistance — it’s a one-stop shop
Nobody should have their water shut off because of a rough month. This program exists for exactly that reason. For more information, please visit this link. This utility assistance program is funded by sponsorships of the 2025 One Water Summit.
Rain Barrel Program
The city sells rain barrels at a discounted price to residents for catching rainwater off your roof to water plants and gardens — a big win on the coast where rain (when we get it!) can be put to work. Heads up: they’re currently out of stock, but check back periodically on the city’s Water Programs page. The city is supposed to receive more rain barrels by Friday April 24th or Monday April 27th.

Xeriscape Learning Center (Free to Visit)
Located at 1900 N. Chaparral, this is a free public garden that shows you how to landscape with drought-tolerant plants that thrive in our coastal climate — think native Texas plants that need little to no watering. Great for ideas if you want a yard that looks good without draining your wallet or the reservoirs.
For more info, please visit this link. If you would like to volunteer to help maintain the Xeriscape Garden visit link.
Water Flushing Program (Free Yard Watering)
Who knew? This one is unique to Corpus. When the city flushes fire hydrants (routine maintenance), Corpus Christi Water employees will actually redirect that water to water selected residents’ yards — for free. You have to apply and be selected, but it’s worth looking into. For info, visit this link.
How to Access Any of These
- Call 311 (or (361) 826-CITY from outside city limits) — they can connect you to any water program
- Visit corpuschristitx.gov and search “Water Programs”
- Stage 3 info: stage3.cctexas.com
One More Thing Worth Knowing
Corpus Christi Water has a Utility Billing Office that can set up payment plans if you’re struggling. Don’t wait until you get a disconnect notice — call early and they can often work something out.
