What Is the County Convention?

The Nueces County Democratic Convention is the next step in the Texas Democratic Party’s delegate selection process. If you participated in the March primary and signed a convention card, you are eligible to attend as a delegate. The convention selects delegates who will go on to represent Nueces County at the Texas State Democratic Convention — which this year is being held right here in Corpus Christi.

This is not a spectator event. It is a working meeting of Democrats who show up to shape the platform, select delegates, and make decisions about how the party operates in our community.

Why Nueces County Is a Convention You Don’t Want to Skip

Texas is not a red state — it is a low-turnout state. Nueces County is a majority-Hispanic community of more than 353,000 people, and the Democratic Party’s strength here depends directly on how organized and engaged its members are at every level. The convention is one of those levels.

When Democrats skip the convention process, they cede influence over who represents them at the state level and over what the party stands for. When they show up, they build the kind of ground-level organization that wins elections.

This year the stakes are especially high. The Texas Democratic Convention will be held in Corpus Christi — our home. Having a strong, well-organized Nueces County delegation at that convention is a matter of local pride and practical political power. The delegates selected on March 21 will be in the room when decisions are made.

What Happens at the Convention

Conventions can feel unfamiliar if you’ve never attended one, but the basic structure is straightforward. Delegates gather, credentials are verified, committees are formed, and resolutions may be debated and adopted. Most importantly, delegates to the state convention are selected. The process is democratic in the most literal sense — the people in the room make the decisions.

If you care about voting rights, water access, housing affordability, immigration, public education, or any other issue affecting Nueces County, the convention is where you can put those values on the record.

How to Participate

If you voted in the Democratic primary and signed a convention card at your polling place, you are already a delegate — you just need to show up. If you are unsure whether you signed a card, contact the Nueces County Democratic Party or reach out to Island Democrats directly.

Even if you didn’t sign a card, conventions often seat additional participants. Don’t assume you can’t attend — ask first.
