Where Nueces County Democrats Stand — and Why It Matters in 2026

Nueces County is majority-Democratic in population but not always in outcomes. Understanding why is the first step to changing it.

With more than 353,000 residents and a population that is 62% Hispanic, Nueces County should be one of the most reliably Democratic counties in South Texas. In many local races, it is. But statewide and federal races tell a different story — and the gap between our population and our political power comes down to one thing: voter registration and turnout.

The Registration Gap Is Real

Only 63% of eligible Hispanic voters in Texas are registered to vote, compared to 79% of eligible white non-Hispanic voters. That 16-point gap isn’t unique to Nueces County, but it hits harder here because Hispanic voters are the majority of our community. Closing even half that gap in Nueces County alone could shift outcomes in close races up and down the ballot.

Texas as a whole ranks 45th in the nation in voter registration as a percentage of population. We are one of the hardest states in which to register and one of the easiest in which to lose your registration if you move or miss a cycle. That is not an accident — it is a policy choice, and it affects our community disproportionately.

What 2026 Looks Like

The 2026 Texas primary runoffs are scheduled for May 26. That date matters because runoffs are low-turnout elections where a small number of motivated voters can decide who appears on the November ballot. In past cycles, Nueces County Democratic runoffs have been decided by margins of a few hundred votes. Your vote in May is not a warm-up — it is often the election that counts.

Beyond the runoffs, 2026 is a full election year for Texas with statewide races, legislative seats, and local offices on the ballot. The Texas Democratic Convention will be held right here in Corpus Christi, making this a uniquely important year for our community to show up, be visible, and be counted.

What Gets in the Way

The barriers to Democratic turnout in Nueces County are not mysterious. They include voter registration deadlines that catch people off guard — you must register 30 days before any election in Texas. They include limited early voting locations on the Island. They include a culture, in some corners of our community, of political fatigue or the belief that one vote doesn’t matter in a red state.

That last one deserves a direct response: Texas is not a red state. It is a low-turnout state. The difference is important. Harris County flipped. Bexar County holds. Cameron County delivers. Nueces County is in play every single cycle — and the margin is consistently close enough that organized, motivated voters can and do change outcomes.

What Island Democrats Does About It

We register voters year-round. We show up at community events with cards, pens, and answers. We run Monday morning coffees and monthly happy hours where candidates can meet voters face to face. We partner with Indivisible Coastal Bend, the Tejano Democrats, and other coalition groups to reach voters across the county — not just on the Island.

If you are registered, bring someone who isn’t. If you moved in the last two years, check your registration right now at vote.org — a change of address can knock you off the rolls without any notification. If you want to help register voters, call Victoria at 361-548-6804.

The 2026 Texas Democratic Convention comes to Corpus Christi. The May 26 runoffs are closer than they seem. And every week, our community gets a little bigger and a little more engaged. This is the moment to make sure every one of those voices has a ballot to go with it.
