North Padre Island is our sanctuary, and as Island Democrats, we know that the coastal breeze and South Texas sun are usually enough to anchor the soul. Most days, a walk along our sweeping beaches or a moment lost in the vast horizon of the Gulf of Mexico washes away the world’s noise. But in times of unprecedented political upheaval, even the tide isn’t enough to pull the tension away. When the chaos feels louder than the surf, your pen becomes your most powerful instrument of resistance—the tool that maps your inner peace when the external landscape shifts.
We’re living through history right now. Water crises. Voting rights battles. Political upheaval. Community struggle. And in the middle of all of it — you are here, feeling things, witnessing things, carrying things.
Journaling is one of the most powerful things you can do right now. Not just for your mental health — but as an act of documentation. Of resistance. Of love for the people who come after us.
Here’s why it matters and how to start
For YOUR wellbeing:
Brain dump journaling — Set a timer for 5 minutes. Write everything in your head without stopping. Don’t edit. Don’t judge. Just empty it out. You will feel lighter immediately.
Gratitude + grief together — You don’t have to choose between acknowledging what’s hard and finding what’s good. Write both. “Today was heavy because ___. And I also noticed ___.” Both are true. Both deserve space.
Glimmer journaling — Write down one small moment of joy or beauty every day. The pelican you saw on the seawall. The way the bay looked at sunset. Your neighbor’s laugh. These moments are data. Collect them.
Anger pages — Write your anger out raw and unfiltered. Don’t post it. Don’t send it. Just write it. Anger that has somewhere to go doesn’t have to eat you alive.
End of day release — Before bed, write three things: what happened today, how it made you feel, and what you’re letting go of before you sleep. This one is life-changing.
For HISTORY:
You are a witness — What is happening in Corpus Christi and across this country right now will be studied, remembered, and written about for generations. Your perspective — as a resident of the Coastal Bend, as a community member, as a human being living through this moment — is valuable. Write it down.
Date every entry — Future you and future historians will thank you. Note the date, the weather, what was on the news, what you heard at the grocery store.
Document what people are saying — Write down conversations you have with neighbors, family, strangers. How are people feeling about the water crisis? The election threats? The cost of groceries? These on-the-ground perspectives are irreplaceable.
Respond to the news — Don’t just consume it. Write about it. How did you feel when you heard about the mail voting executive order? What did you think when you heard the reservoirs were at 8.4%? Your reactions are part of the historical record.
Write letters to the future — “Dear person reading this in 2046 — here is what it felt like to live in Corpus Christi in 2026…” This practice is profound and grounding. It reminds you that your life has meaning beyond this moment.
You don’t need a fancy journal. A notes app works. A $1 composition notebook works. A voice memo works. What matters is that you start.
